The carving of larges figures into the chalk hillsides of Wessex is unique to this part of Southern England.
This small area of the world has been home to the strange and mysterious for untold generations - rings of stone, flying saucers, burial chambers, witchcraft and crop circles. The latter could even be called a modern example of these chalk hill figures, land art on a somewhat smaller and less permanent basis.
There are examples of hill figures throughout the world. The Nazca lines in Peru, the Great Snake in America, but this type of art is predominately found in Wessex.
Besides the general ambience of the area, this part of Britain has been chosen because of the large number of suitable hills, green with turf on the outside, white with chalk on the inside.
There have been quite an assortment of figures to adorn these softly undulating hills, including military badges, a panda, a kiwi, a naked giant and of course, plenty of horses.
